Day 5 - Heading to Yellowstone

Leaving Cody, WY, heading to Yellowstone, we saw a herd of elk crossing a stream, uncommon for this time of year. After entering Yellowstone, the first national park in America, we saw a buffalo along the side of the road.  Our bus driver (who retired from the Forestry Service) said that we'll see so many buffalo, we'll start saying 'Oh, just another buffalo'!  A couple of our sightings were small herds that walked along the side of the road, cars stopped to take pictures, and one bull would finally cross the road and the others would follow.  We visited many geothermal areas as well as waterfalls. We ended the day at Old Faithful Village. We were there for two Old Faithful eruptions. The second one was better than the first.

This is a herd of buffalo. Magnificent, aren't they?

This is called Lower Falls.

We are having a picnic lunch in the parking lot of the Upper Falls.

This is one of many geothermal areas.  There are wooden walkways at many such sites. By the way, the sulphur smell, along with the warm steam, make for an 'other world environment'.

This is the second blow of Old Faithful. Well worth the wait.

Just before we reached the hotel, we spotted a bull elk close to the side of the road. When we turned the corner, we saw a cow (female elk) close to the road. It was too dark for a good picture.
