Day 2 - Rapid City

Today, we visited Crazy Horse Memorial and Mount Rushmore Monument. Crazy Horse was begun in June of 1948. Today, the widow and seven of the sculptor's ten children continue to work on the project.  Korczak Ziolkowski, the sculptor, had briefly worked on Mount Rushmore. Mount Rushmore was not completed as envisioned by creator Gutzon Borgium.  He envisioned the presidents to be sculpted to their waistlines. Congress cut off funds in 1941 at the beginning of our nation's involvement in WWII.

This is the 1/34th scale model and the actual sculpture in progress.

Here's a closer picture of the memorial.  The memorial is being built with no federal money.  Korczak thought that government money would have too many strings attached.

A view of Mount Rushmore through the Avenue of the Flags.

We have to have a people picture. And what better people than us?

A view from our adventurous (strenuous) hike around President's Trail.  The hike turned out to be a lot more 'cardio' than we wanted! So we rewarded ourselves by having some praline pecan ice cream!
